Love of Learning
Not a day goes by when I don’t think of my father, who instilled in me a love of reading and learning.
My dad taught me to read my first book, The Children’s Illustrated Encyclopaedia of General Knowledge. Perhaps it was that knowledge that made me become a high-school teacher.
Now that I’m retired and watching a third generation of his grow, I think of our fundamental freedoms: conscience, religion, belief, opinion – and, of course, freedom of the press.
My father was a soldier in the Second World War, standing for democracy. I miss him dearly.
