Climate control in schools_radon_mould_and_air_quality
This is the letter, published in The Chronicle on January 25, 2012
Consider these events: Since early December 2011, there have been reports on the problems of the indoor air quality of an elementary school of the Commission scolaire de Montréal. As a result the CSDM is testing the air quality of all of its schools and checking for mould which presents a risk to people.
On January 12, 2012, CNN aired a special, “Toxic Schools,” with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Last Saturday, The Gazette reported that mould was discovered at a Cegep. Action is being taken.
All this brings to mind a written and verbal request; I made at the Dec. 19, 2011, Lester B. Pearson School Board Council meeting.
“Will the board consider doing a board wide inspection of all its schools regarding issues dealing with mould and other health related matters?”
The answer given was not really reassuring.
Considering that the Quebec government has allocated monies strictly for this purpose, the Pearson board should inspect all of its schools and make available all test results – a clean bill of health – to their respective Governing Boards.
